Be the Standout Candidate in the New Economy
Would you approach a job search differently today than you would have
a few years ago? Certainly. Today there is much more competition in
the job market and additionally there are many more venues to help
you in your search. Job seekers should consider the following tips to
stand out in this challenged economy.
HOW TO STANDOUT OF THE PACK:
1.) Social Networking. Make sure you are registered on the free
professional networking sites such as www.facebook.com, www.twitter.
com, www.linkedin.com www.zoominfo.com, and www.xing.com.
2.) Job Placement Sites. Register with the free job placement sites
such as monster.com and careerbuilder.com where you can list your
resume and arrange to receive notification about jobs in your field of
interest.
3.) Contact Convergence. Submit your resume online to a prospective
employer as requested but also have an insider that you have met
through networking events hand deliver your resume to the party to
whom the position reports. If you know any vendors that do business
with the company with whom you are seeking employment, ask them
to deliver a resume on your behalf. You can never have enough people
advocate for you.
4.) List testimonials on your resume. By now you have collected
testimonials from previous managers and executives. List a few key
lines from each directly on the resume under a section entitled:
Testimonials.
5.) Use a P.S. in your cover letter. P.S.’s are often the first and
sometimes the only thing read in a letter. Make sure your P.S. draws
attention to something outstanding that you did or that someone has
said about you.
6.) Search for niche markets. If you are reinventing yourself, you
might search the Internet for freelance work you can do on the side at
elance.com. If you are retired, you might consider retirementjobs.com
where there are employers specifically seeking people who have built
a lifetime of skills and are eager to put them to good use.
7.) Volunteer for boards or in other industries. Seek out opportunities
to volunteer where you can build relationships and acquire new skills.
If you are not looking for a new job but simply want to secure the one
you have you might consider these tips:
HOW TO STANDOUT IN THE JOB YOU HAVE:
1.) Talk to your boss. Sit down and have a very direct and pointed
conversation with your boss about your future in the company. Share
your own career goals with him or her.
2.) Volunteer to help with more strategic initiatives. Asking for
additional work shows an interest and desire to help your department
and company to succeed. It also puts a spotlight on your value to the
business.
3.) Sharpen your soft skills. Attend networking events and educational
opportunities to build your people skills. Strong interpersonal skills
play a crucial role in gaining the respect of your boss and coworkers.
They will also attract the notice of outside influencers who might open
new doors of opportunity for you.
4.) Find a mentor. Develop mentoring relationships, either inside or
outside the company. Recent studies have shown that four out of five
promotions are influenced by a mentor higher up in the company.
5.) Learn the art of self-promotion. If you have had major
accomplishments or created successful programs, make sure people
know about it. Frame it in terms of what the team accomplished if it
was a group project. Leadership is knowing when to give the glory
away.
6.) Read up on leadership. In your spare time read books and articles
on how leaders succeed. No other topic will take you farther. Start now!
