Find Your Next Job via Social Networking Sites

Traditional thinking tells you that when you are looking for a job you should
check the classified advertisements in newspapers and if you really feel
high tech you should check Internet job posting sites such as monster.com
and careerbuilder.com.  There is another medium out there to consider and
that is social networking.  There are now dozens of social networking Web
sites on which you may register information about yourself, post updates on
a regular basis and your “network” of followers can help you with your task
of meeting new people that may help you.

Now before you go getting all weirded out about the complex nature of this, it
really isn’t that difficult.  Remember when you taught yourself how to use the
Internet?  Now you use the Internet everyday and don’t think twice about the
process of using it.  Think of social networking the same way.

Registering for most of the social networking sites is free and simple.
Probably one of the most well known sites is
Facebook.com.  You set up a
simple profile with a photo.  You list your interests, education etc.  On all of
the sites there is the ability to post a simple daily comment – roughly about
147 characters.  Some people post comments hourly.  These comments
should be relative to what your personal mission is.  If your mission is to
find a job, list links to sites that might help others find a job.  Or post
comments that are inspirational.  The goal is to have people “friend” you on
Facebook or “follow” you on some of the other sites.  So your posts must be
interesting and you must have friends and followers who will read them.
Stay away from things such as, “I am going to the store now.”  That is great if
you are just using the sites for social notes to your friends.  But if you want to
gain followers and a strong network, keep it relative to your mission.

Twitter.com, LinkedIn.com and ZoomInfo.com are three very good
professional networking sites.  On LinkedIn you can actually post your
resume.  Many professional recruiters and human resources professionals
are now using these sites to recruit talent for companies and organizations.
With Twitter the key is to create a “following” by following others and inviting
them in turn “follow” you.  When you “follow” someone you receive their
posted comments on your home.  Likewise, if they are following you, they
will see your updates on their home page.  When you post on Twitter, make
it something people will find helpful, funny, or interesting.  You can become
an expert using these mediums.  Just be thoughtful about what you are
posting.  The broader your network of people who respect your updates the
more likely they will recommend you.  Here is a link to an article on 10 Easy
Steps for Twitter Beginners: http://twitpwr.com/aD6/

You may find it a nuisance to have to post to all of these networks.  That is
where
Ping.fm comes in handy.  If you register with Ping.fm and choose to
link all of your social networking sites on Ping, you can make one post there
that will update all of the sites simultaneously.

You might even consider starting a free Web log of Blog at Wordpress.com.
A blog is where you post something short everyday on a specific topic.  That
topic may be your area of expertise.  Ping.fm will update Wordpress.com as
well.

Spend some time exploring these mediums to broaden your sphere of
influence.  Start now!
