The Positivity Self Test - How to Keep Negativity
Away

Generally people realize that keeping a journal is a helpful way to
reconcile daily struggles and reflect on them for a better plan and
greater peace.  Yet the truth is that most people do not journal
because they view it as time consuming, they can’t envision the
benefits of it strongly enough to stay with it and they just don’t truly
believe that long term they can change their habits anyway.

I have two questions for you related to this topic: 1) If you could wave
a magic wand, what would you want to accomplish over the next six
months?  2) Are you any closer to that goal today than you were a
month ago?  If the answer is “no” then chances are six months from
now you won’t be either.

Most people see their future very much like their present +/- 10%.
This translates to people not expecting to be much more fulfilled by
their career, relationships, physical and spiritual health, and leisure
activities than they are today.  If that’s the case, then how do you live
a happier more balanced life when one or more of these areas is
unfulfilled?  You don’t.  You can’t.

Barbara Fredrickson, PhD, Kenan Distinguished Professor of
Psychology and principal investigator of the Positive Emotions and
Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, discovered that experiencing positive emotions in a 3-to-
1 ratio with negative ones leads people to new habits of fulfillment.
Achieving this ratio is a tipping point beyond which people naturally
become more resilient to adversity and effortlessly achieve what
they once could only imagine.

The Positivity Self Test:

Take two minutes to complete Dr. Fredrickson’s Positivity Self Test.
Your score provides a snapshot of how your emotions of the past
day combine to create your positivity ratio.  Dr. Frederickson
suggests taking her “Positivity Self Test” every evening for two
weeks to see if you can grow your score.

Chances are that your score after first taking the test will not be in
the range you had hoped.  So what steps can you take to become
more positive?  We’ve already determined that most people find it
hard to keep up with something like journaling to change behavior.
But can you keep up with a few words on an index card?  Famous
leadership author John Maxwell used to keep an index card in his
pocket and jot down one positive thing he learned everyday and one
way he shared it with another person.

Discovery/Action Journal:

1. Keep an index card in your desk drawer at work, shirt pocket,
kitchen, nightstand or purse.
2. With a pen divide it in thirds from left to right with the first third
being the widest.
3. In the first section write down one positive thing you’ve
“Discovered” every day - an “Aha” moment, ie: Sometimes the only
thing people want to hear is that you understand.
4. In the second section list one person you’ve “Shared” that
wisdom with.  Helping others diverts negativity away and welcomes
in peace, ie: Another parent.
5. In the third section write down what “Action” you plan to take
around this knowledge for yourself, ie: Will tell my child this the next
time she complains about something.

to keep track!

If you do this exercise every day over the same two weeks that you
score the Positivity Self Test every evening I suspect you will see
and feel an improvement in your outlook.  Then watch how that
translates to your fulfillment.

How long could writing a few words every day take?  Certainly less
time than brushing your teeth.  Start your Discover/Action List now!
What can you write it on?
