Where is Your Success Sketch?

Friday night, February 27th 2009 at 10:45 p.m. I finished the
manuscript for my book that is being published by New Horizon
Press and will be released in November of 2009.  Saturday morning
I took the box that held the contracted two hard copies and a disk
copy to the post office and kissed it goodbye as well as the $11 it
took to mail it.  The experience felt like a cross between birthing a
baby and a huge sigh of relief.

I began writing this book in the summer of 2007.  The corporation
where I work was in a transition that was leaving everyone
ambivalent.  A friend had decided to pursue her Ph.D. during this
time and suggested that I focus on something in my free time that
would be personally rewarding as well.  I have had many blessings
in my career and countless mentors and learning opportunities
along the way.  Without the lessons I learned on my journey I would
never have been able to turn my life around.  Since I had been a
newspaper reporter in my pre-fundraising days and I love to write, I
decided to share some of the wisdom that I had gained by writing a
book, the working title of which is Chutes and Ladders – Starting
Over Without Starting at the Bottom.

I began writing the book in July of 2007 and wrote many of the
chapters while on vacation at the beach in Ocean City, New Jersey
that summer.  I felt so at home, sitting on the bed of our rental house
while sea gulls flew outside my open window and I could hear the
children riding their bikes out back.  Ah – the life of a writer – that is
where I see myself someday in the future.  But for now, back to
reality where I re-read the manuscript so many times in the editing
process that I could practically recite it verbatim. The chore of doing
this reminded me of how much I believe in the advice that I give
others to be true because I am still living the reality of how it helps
me everyday.

The very first rule in the book is “Begin with a ‘Success Sketch’ and
Hang It Where You Will See It Everyday.”  Back in the summer of
2007 if I hadn’t penciled myself speaking at a podium on advice
from a book I had published and stuck that sketch in the corner of a
mirror above my computer desk where I am looking right now, I
would never have been able to part with $11 yesterday to mail the
book off to a publisher.  Writing the book was only half the
challenge.  I had to find the right publisher who would take it on.  I
submitted this manuscript to a number of publishing houses over
the next six months.  Many showed an interest but none were willing
to publish it.  When I discovered New Horizon Press I could see that
their list of books carried a similar theme to mine.  The editor
describes the company as publishing “gripping, emotionally driven
books about real people caught in extraordinary circumstances.”
Sounded like me.

I was very fortunate one Friday in November when I was at a
professional meeting and received the call from the publisher, Dr.
Joan Dunphy.  I could hardly contain myself when she told me they
wanted to publish my book.  I was so excited I got a speeding ticket
on the way home that day.  Fortunately the policeman gave me a
break.  No points.  I only had to pay a fine.

There was one drawback, however.  I had submitted the book at
30,000 words and she wanted me to increase it to 70,000.  “No
problem,” I told her.  I knew that I was dedicated to get my advice into
the hands of people who needed it.  I would do whatever it took to
accomplish that especially since the recent dive in the economy was
so adversely affecting the lives of many in need of help.  I only had
until March 1st to finish writing the book.  That was only four months
away and I had to more than double the length.  The 30,000 words
that I had already written took me 10 months to write the first time
around.  I had my work cut out for me.

Never the less I got it done.  Every night and weekend I spent writing
I just kept glancing up at my ‘Success Sketch’ and concentrating on
what it would feel like to be helping people via the vast audience a
book reaches versus how it felt to tirelessly type away.  My friends
haven’t seen me much this winter.  I have apologized to all of them
and am grateful that I didn’t have to write this over the summer when
I prefer to spend my weekends with my children and friends at the
pool.

So allow me a sigh that would put the Big Bad Wolf to shame.  The
book is complete!  And I will go back to teaching my classes in my
free time; the next of which starts Tuesday at CCAC Allegheny
Campus…until the publisher gives me the manuscript back to
revise after it has been edited.  I’ll be ready.
